Join Local Sprouts Cooperative to celebrate two years of Local Sprouts Cafe. Since opening in June 2010, Local Sprouts Cafe has become a home for local foods and community in Portland. Our menu features food from Maine’s farms and our space is host to music, poetry readings, and a diverse group of people from our community. Local Sprouts Cafe is also Maine’s only worker-owned cafe and is proud to be a cooperative that supports workers and the Earth.
In addition to being great cooks, servers, and teachers, Local Sprouts Cooperative workers are creative artists, musicians, dancers and poets. “Illuminate” celebrates our cooperative creativity by sharing art by Robert Hammond, music by Gaelle Robins, Christopher Pulsoni and a collaborative Sprouts band, and a spoken word dance performance by many Local Sprouts workers. Our workers will be joined by community musician Ahmad Hassan Muhammad. Local Sprouts Cafe will be transformed with Hammond’s paintings which feature vibrant colors, black light flouresence, and sculptural elements,
Local Sprouts Cooperative also offers local organic catering and teaches about cooking with local foods. Since Local Sprouts Cooperative started in 2007, we have catered for over 200 non-profits, businesses, school, government agencies and individuals in the Portland area for lunches to conference, parties to weddings. Local Sprouts has taught youth in the Portland working with schools including Lyseth Elementary, Casco Bay High School, King Middle, and MECA, and with organizations including Cultivating Community, Winter Cache Project, PROP, and Learning Works.
We are excited to celebrate two years of cooking and serving great local food at Local Sprouts Cafe and look forward to many more years to come.
